The Power Of Gratitude

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.”

Gratitude is one of my favorite ways to invite happiness and positivity into my life. It is easy to do, it doesn’t take any effort and it makes me happier everyday. To express gratitude requires only an appreciation of the positive aspect of your situations, when you show appreciation for what you already have in life and for what you are experience in your life, your brain will learn to focus more on the positive things in every situations, because what you focus on is what you get, so focus on the positive and you will bring more positivity into your life.

Gratitude can have a powerful impact on your life because it engages the brain in a virtuous cycle. Your brain can only focus its attention on one thing at a time, it can not focus on both positive and negative stimuli at the same time. Like when you had a bad day, where everything seems to go wrong all at the same time, or when you had a beautiful day, everything seems to go your way all day long. When you are feeling grateful, you’re activating the brain region associated with the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter released by the brain that helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers, it enables us to seek reward and take action. With gratitude comes happiness and with happiness comes more gratitude, and this wheel will go on and on.

Benefits of gratitude:

  • Gratitude reduce materialism
  • Gratitude makes us more optimistic & positive
  • Gratitude makes us happier and self conscious
  • Gratitude develops our personality
  • Gratitude helps us forgive more easily
  • Gratitude improves emotional and physical health
  • Gratitude can strengthen relationships and communities
  • Gratitude improves our sleep

Dr. Robert Emmons says:
“Without gratitude, life can be lonely, depressing and impoverished. Gratitude enriches human life. It elevates, energize, inspire and transform. People are moved, opened and humbled through expression of gratitude.”

Ways to express gratitude:

  • Keep a gratitude journal
  • Thinking about things that you are grateful for everyday
  • Simply say thank you for everything that you’re grateful for or appreciate in life
  • Express gratitude in person
  • Sending notes of appreciation to friends, family or love one
  • Grateful meditation

The universe loves gratitude. Make a commitment with yourself to express gratitude everyday, make it a habit and you will gain long term happiness. It won’t work until you do it, don’t be to surprised if it works. You’ll always be happy when you choose to appreciate everything life throws at you.
